Haley Knox has been improving significantly over the past 3 months. Despite the cancellation of road races Haley has been making significant gains in her fitness and training. Haley runs on the From the Heart Racing team and has been doing some social distanced small group runs to stay fit. In March Haley ran the the Shamrock and Roll 5k, the first race of the USATF Grand Prix with a 5k PR of 19:51. Since then Haley has gotten a half marathon and a 5k PR with virtual races taking minutes and seconds off of her previous times. Haley reports her goal for this year is to break 19 in the 5k and break 5:30 in the mile. If races open up later in the year she would like to race a 10k and/or a half marathon. She is pictured above during the Red Dress Run virtual race where she got her recent 5k PR and came in 3rd overall and second female.

Janet Voelpert who is pictured on the right with her teammate Debby was nominated for the April athlete of the month. “Janet is what running is all about — a great competitor who has made her friends better runners — most importantly she is a great person!” Janet is in her 70s and she has been running for 45 years. She is very competitive and can still beat women more than half her age! She still trains extremely hard putting in mileage, speed work and strength training. She is a role model to many. Janet reports she works with a coach, Heidi Langan and has been strength training, running hills around her neighborhood and going to the track to stay busy with corona virus. She is a member of the Milford Road Runners which providers her with wonderful group support.  Janet is in her 70’s but that doesn’t stop her from running and racing. Her love for running has been her greatest joy.

Russ race photo

December 18th, 2019

Russel Blatt is the December Athlete of the month after having what he described as “the longest racing year of my life, with the first race of 2019 being the USATF CT grand prix 5K in New Haven in early March.”  Some of the highlights of this year for him was winning the Boston A.A. medley for his age group, which included a 1:22:30 half marathon; running Litchfield Hills for the first time; running a few mile races for the first time since high school, including a 5:23 on the track; and setting the 60-64 age group record at the Manchester Road Race.

Russ runs for Hartford Track Club  and he was recently 6th place individual finish at the National XC Club Championship on December 14th, leading his team as 7th out of 41 teams. The National XC race had the best turnout ever in all age groups.  He reports, “the course was less hilly than it could have been for those who know the Lehigh University campus.  The heavy rain the day before made for some challenging footing, so it was even more essential to get ahead of the field so you could pick your route through the puddles ,mud, tree roots and cornhusks!

Russ moved to CT in his early twenties, he was drawn to the Hartford Track Club because he says the club has great older runners who scored well in the team competitions.  Russ said, “I am proud to help continue that tradition and hopefully can stay healthy for several years and compete at a high level in the senior age groups!”

David said “It is a great race for all ages and we both ran well.” The Boilermaker was his “A” race this year and he placed top 3 in his age group. He looks forward to running the 400M and 1500M in Toronto next summer.
